Adopting A Chinchilla

Is A Chinchilla Right For You?

Chinchillas are wonderful pets, and are very intelligent and social, but you should consider the pros and cons before investing in one. Their personalities make them very entertaining. They are nocturnal and active in the evening and at night, which works great for those who work days. They have no natural odor and usually have a low incidence of allergy problems from dander, however some people find they are allergic to the hay. Chinchillas do have a mind of their own and are not big on sitting in laps or being held. For a young child who wants a companion pet a rabbit or guinea pig is usually a better choice. If you can get along with their 'do it my way' attitudes, then you will be fine. Chinchillas much prefer to interact on their own terms, they will climb on you, nibble toes, and sit on you, but most don't want to be held. You need to be willing to learn something about the animal and it's needs, and provide a proper diet and environment. Please let us know if we can answer any questions you might have if you are considering a chinchilla for a pet.

Our Adoption Process

Our chinnies are very special to us. Please understand if we have questions for you. We want to make sure that our chins go to forever homes where they will receive the proper care and attention. Anyone under the age of 18 must provide parental approval before adopting.
As members of MCBA, we are required to have a written agreement for all adoptions. When you decide you want to adopt a chin, we will send you a copy of the agreement to look over. A signed copy will be given when the chinchillas goes home. We will be happy to send you photos by email of any chins you are interesten in. If you live close enough, we encourage you to visit and see the chinchillas in person. We can let you interact and play with them. That is the best way to find that special one that tugs at your heart. We require a nonrefundable deposit of $25 to reserve a chinchilla. (This is subtracted from the total adoption fee).
>Our chinchillas go home with a supply of our pellets, hay, dust bath, chew treats, and daily treats. We also provide a care/information booklet, a pedigree card, and a year's membership to The Chinchilla Club, a wonderful online resource. If you have a name for your new baby, we will begin to use it so that the chin learns it.
We can have most colors except for sapphire and violet wraps, but available colors will vary. PLEASE NOTE: We do NOT ship chins. We will make arrangements to drive up to three hours to meet someone for a small gas fee.
We are available any time to answer questions you may have, whether or not you adopt from us. We enjoy hearing from other chinchilla families!
